Lilith Unfair - the true story of the first wife of Adam
Lilith_s - a short video clip
Summer 1999 Written by Joseph Romain in concert with: Michael Boughn and David Anderson, Directed by David Anderson, Designed by Barbara Klunder, Music by Andrew Timar
Lilith Unfair told the story of the supposed first wife of Adam. It gave a startling answer to the question: "If Lilith was the first wife of Adam and if Eve was the second wife of Adam, what was the relation of Lilith to Eve?"
Lilith Unfair was our most successful park production yet, as judged by audience attendance and enthusiasm. About 250 people per night saw the magical, spectacular production of Lilith Unfair. Lilith Unfair showed the two main characters, Lilith and God, in many realizations: hand puppets, rod puppets, "lolli" puppets, spectacular giant puppets, and masked actors. Lilith has been said to have been the First Woman of Biblical Fame, handmaiden of Innana, the Queen of Sheeba, the Serpent in the Garden, Jezebel, the Mother of all Genies, the Screech Owl in the night, the bain of babies and nursing mothers, the night hag and the succubus, the source of men's nocturnal emissions and the consort of both Satan and Yahweh, so the creative team had plenty to work with. Clay and Paper Theatre's production of the play was nothing less than a spectacle. The use of broad strokes and delicate details kept audiences agog and attuned to the demanding script. Barbara Klunder's brilliant design featured puppets ranging in size from three inches to 17 feet. The orchestra was comprised of a giant marimba, accordion, trombone and a broad variety of bells, whistles and tympanic devices. Above all this were strange and wonderful performances from a cast headed by Emerita Emerencia as Lilith. Lilith Unfair celebrated the roots of hedonism and the beauty and humanity of sexuality.
